Bassenthwaite Lake is one of the largest lakes in the Lake District at 4 miles long and almost a mile wide. The village of the same name is an idyllic, peaceful and typically English village, a great base to explore the surrounding area. The lake itself has plenty of water sports to enjoy such as canoeing, boating and paddle boarding. There are also numerous walking routes easily reached from our Bassenthwaite cottages so you can explore the picturesque area on foot. The 24-acre Lake District Wildlife Park features over 100 species of wild and domestic animals and is very focused on conservation and sustainability.

For those who enjoy local beverages and dining, The Lakes Distillery is situated at the north end of the lake and is easy to reach from our Bassenthwaite cottages. It’s the largest whisky distillery in England and is set in a magnificent location with scenic views across Bassenthwaite Lake. The Bistro at the Distillery is a positively reviewed restaurant serving up afternoon tea, lunches and dinners, ideal to fill up at before heading back to one of our Bassenthwaite holiday cottages for a cosy evening in.
