Located on the edge of the popular village of Hawkshead, this charming Grade II listed 18th-century cottage is a true rural retreat. Oozing character, it provides a welcoming and homely base for your holiday with accommodation for up to six people in three bedrooms. There are some superb walks and cycle trails on the doorstep and two dogs are welcome too, meaning nobody needs to be left at home.

The property is both elegant and stylish, with furnishings which create a homely feel. The cosy lounge has a traditional appeal with plenty of comfortable seating for you all to unwind on while the open fire crackles away. On chillier evenings, get the open fire going in the dining room as your guests sit down to enjoy a meal together. Whether you’re making a picnic or rustling up a snack, the pretty kitchen is well-equipped to cater for all your needs. Head upstairs when it’s time to rest, where you’ll find three inviting, cottage-style bedrooms which provide a welcome spot to catch up on some sleep. Get the BBQ fired up in the enclosed patio outside and enjoy a little al fresco dining as the sun goes down.

Hawkshead is proud of its associations with Beatrix Potter and the gallery displaying some of her early illustrations is not to be missed. It’s within walking distance of the cottage, along with some pubs and shops. Explore Lake Windermere (5 miles) and Coniston Water (4.5 miles) either on foot or by water, by hopping on a pleasure cruise. The more energetic will love trying out some of the water sports on offer here. For some great woodland trails and a chance to try Segway riding, head to Grizedale Forest, 3.5 miles away.

The Cottage is fantastic! Clean, really well furnished, cosy and the perfect place to relax after a hard day walking! The beds were comfy, and the log fires a real bonus. The location is ideal as there are places to eat and get provisions but at the same time feels very quiet and relaxed. Locals were really friendly and really want to go back!

Enjoyed a wonderful week at Barn Syke. The owners telephoned to welcome us on our first morning which was a lovely touch. The cottage is cosy, well equipped and incredibly clean. We ate good meals in all of the pubs and restaurants in the village and particularly recommend The Queen's Head and Poppi Red, (the breakfast in the latter was excellent!)Read more A great base from which to explore with some lovely walks starting from the village. Barn Syke is tastefully furnished in a country cottage style and very well equipped. The location is perfect, only a few paces from 4 good pubs and a well stocked CO OP shop. There are many local walks around the village as well as all the high fells and mountains. We had a lovely stay and we cant wait to book again.

First off, what a fabulous cottage. After our arrival I picked up a voicemail from Jeremy, the homeowner, offering a warm welcome and pleasant stay, which we appreciated. Barn Syke is to a very high standard, the themes in each room heartwarming, giving a lovely atmosphere. The cottage is very well equipped too with some nice extra touches such as Read morethe BBQ - even walking poles and we loved the real fireplaces and made full use. All this in the amazing Hawkshead village. Ace. Hide

Had a really lovely time and would stay again. Barn Syke has everything you need and expect in a lovely cottage with plenty of history. Real fire was most welcome at the start of autumn and the kitchen/dining area is well appointed. Bathroom and bedrooms are comfortable and the courtyard garden is a lovely sun trap.
