Detached, converted school just a short walk away from Pooley Bridge village and Lake Ullswater. A great location for extended family and friends to explore the Lake District, enjoy the fells, climbing, have a trip on one of the Ullswater Steamers or visit the local market towns.

Just a mile from the shores of Ullswater, and featuring an original bell tower and arched windows, this pretty cottage makes a cosy and relaxing holiday home for six guests. This beautifully converted Victorian schoolhouse lies in a picturesque spot to the north of the village of Pooley Bridge. Perfect for families and friends exploring the northern parts of the Lake District National Park, the accommodation is laid out over one floor, with a charming garden that is often visited by wildlife including the occasional red squirrel.

Entering this light, spacious and welcoming property, which has been imaginatively renovated, you will find the bright and inviting lounge. This is a lovely space to relax in, with wooden flooring and ceiling beams, a cosy open fire and French doors opening onto the garden. Complete with a Smart TV/DVD and comfortable seating, the lounge is perfect for snuggling up in the evening with a good book or a favourite movie. The stylishly designed open-plan kitchen/diner has a useful range of equipment and is a pleasure to cook in, while the fresh and airy south-facing dining area provides garden views. The property also has three peaceful bedrooms: two doubles, each with an en-suite shower room, and a twin room next to the bathroom. The enclosed country garden overlooks open fields and is a lovely spot for al fresco drinks in the evening.

The nearby villages of Pooley Bridge (0.5 miles) and Askham (3 miles) have a choice of places to eat and drink, and make a great base for exploring Ullswater, with popular activities including sailing, paddleboarding and horse trekking. Local landmarks and attractions include the site of the Dunmallard hill fort, Askham Hall, Lowther Castle and Gardens, the Rheged Centre and the Aira Force Waterfall (all within 7 miles).

Quiet location, fantastic house, very well equipped, and it was like a home from home. My Mum and Dad ( aged 89 and 90 respectively ), really enjoyed the stay too, as all the accommodation was across the one floor. We've stayed at Barton School house twice now, a few years apart, and loved both stays. The cottage is full of character and has plenty of space; there's peace/quiet but it's not far from Penrith etc. We saw lots of birds in the garden and the resident red squirrel which was wonderful! Pooley Bridge is a 10min downhill walk away (bit harder on the Read morereturn!) with several pubs/cafes and shops. We enjoyed time on the Ullswater lake cruise and drove to stunning locations around the Lakes. Thank you! Hide

Lovely cottage for a family, went with two grown up daughters and their partners. Plenty of room for six. The three seperate bathrooms made all the difference. Large table in the kitchen was great for meals and games. Living room was a great comunal space. Very nice, well equipped property and garden. So great to see a couple of red squirrels enjoying the garden every day. Great location, convenient for Pooley Bridge, Ullswater and surrounding area. Would recommend.

Lovely location. Very nice cottage, but needs a thorough deep clean, and certain other things need attention. En-suites needed to be a little bigger, as would be a tight fit for a larger person. Got to see the red squirrel several times, and a little robin paid us a visit. Also had a visit from two pheasants, and the cows in the field next to the cRead moreottage paid us a visit one evening with their babies. Unfortunately didn't get to see or hear the woodpecker. Lovely place to stay with homely lounge and fire and well equipped kitchen. Excellent location being very quiet but close enough to stroll down into Pooley bridge. Would definitely return to stay there, and would aim to this time spot the busy woodpecker

Our second visit for Christmas. Cottage was decorated for Christmas, lovely and warm with the additional benefit of a log fire. We cooked a full Christmas dinner for six so you can tell the kitchen has all necessaries and Pooley Bridge had excellent eateries for other meals. Really enjoyed our stay. Thanks again.

This is a beautiful holiday home. Comfortable, well equipped, good heating system. Did not have to adjust anything. And its situation is beautiful, gardens all around, and meadow with sheep to look at from the lounge Frecnch windows.

A well equipped and comfortable house. As it's all on one level , it is suitable for anyone with limited mobility. As it is situated outside the village, it is very peaceful and you will hopefully see the resident red squirrel. The house is only a 10 minute walk into Pooley Bridge or 15 minutes if you are pushing a wheelchair. It is slightly hilly Read morebut manageable. Be aware it is a country road and therefore no footpath. This did not cause us any problems. Hide

Fantastic property in beautiful surroundings. Well equipped kitchen, and lovely to watch the red squirrels running around the garden and the regular visits from the local ducks. Really close to Pooley Bridge which was a lovely little place with a great cafe by the river. Would definitely recommend and would happily stay there again.
