  • A beautiful Victorian cottage in the west of the Lake District
  • Sleeps six and welcomes two canine guests looking to explore the Eskdale region
  • Within easy reach of Scafell Pike, Muncaster Fell and Wast Water
Property code: SZ072

The picturesque village of Eskdale Green is home to the Japanese Garden in Giggle Alley forest, and is a fabulous base for walkers, climbers, cyclists and nature lovers exploring the western reaches of the Lake District. From nearby Irton Road (0.25 miles) you can catch the La’al Ratty steam train as it passes through to the pretty coastal village of Ravenglass (6 miles). Landmarks include the Stanley Ghyll Waterfall (5 miles), Scafell Pike (10 miles), Muncaster Castle (7 miles) and Muncaster Fell (3.5 miles). The Esk Valley has miles of beautiful walks, deep pools and impressive fells, as well as plenty of pubs for you to relax in. The beautiful lake of Wast Water is to the north-east (5 miles).

Entering this light and spacious property, the hallway has plenty of space to leave coats and shoes, and leads through to the comfortable, bright and airy lounge. This is a lovely space to unwind in, lightly decorated with a selection of local art. Through the comfortable lounge, you will find yourself surrounded by mountains, with breath-taking views in two directions. The new sun room is a warm and comfortable haven for watching the world go by over your morning coffee. You might even catch sight of the La’al Ratty steam engine! The attractive kitchen/diner is also a lovely space to relax in, and features a traditional flagstone floor, a wood burner, cosy seating and a selection of books, games and toys. The kitchen is equipped with a double fan oven with ceramic hob, a built-in fridge and dishwasher. The microwave and fridge/freezer can be found in the utility room which has plenty of space for wet coats, muddy boots and muddier dogs. There’s also a washing machine in the outhouse and a ground-floor WC. Halfway up the stairs, you will find the handsome Victorian-style bathroom, complete with a freestanding slipper bath with handheld shower, separate walk-in shower and a WC. The first floor offers three cosy and relaxing bedrooms, lightly decorated in cool neutral tones. Each of the bedrooms – a king-size, a twin and a double – has beautiful views over Eskdale, as well as a cast-iron feature fireplace and plenty of storage. Off the master bedroom is a second, private sun room, which overlooks the fells, the railway line in the distance, and the lovely garden at Birk How. This leads to the master en-suite, with WC, basin and large shower enclosure.

Stepping outside, the tiered garden offers glorious vistas over the countryside, with the path of the La’al Ratty Steam Railway passing across the view. A patio area with seating provides an ideal spot for al fresco dining, and the terrace also features mature shrubs and a sloping lawn. A BBQ is provided, and there may be a chance to spot a red squirrel visiting. Parking space is available for two cars on the gated driveway, plus space for a third car on the road. Please note that the drive is short but fairly steep and is unsuitable for sports cars and low wheel-base cars. When using the drive, drivers should take care to go slowly on the right-hand side of the drive. Further parking can be found in the nearby village car park.

We had a lovely week and this was a good base to explore the Eskdale area. The cottage is well equipped and has many things not normally included. The drive access is steep and narrow but parking on the road is an option down the hill. General cleanliness was good but some areas needed attention. We have no hesitation in recommending it for a nice Read moreholiday fest. Hide

A wonderful holiday house; the addition of the sun room and 2nd bathroom makes it spacious enough for a family with four children; and the sun room is a wonderful place to sit and look at the stunning views in any weather. A perfect venue with amazing views, no shortage of equipment. As the weather wasn't very good we appreciated the logs for a lovely fire in the evenings to relax in the comfy sitting room. The sun room was great for a quiet read and to admire the garden and the scenery, superb. A great place to celebrate our 80th birthday with our family.

The cottage location and views are amazing. We took our dog and walked every day in a new direction and found plenty of pubs along the way to enjoy a well earned lunch. Great walk over Muncaster fell to Ravenglass and caught the steam train home. The weather helped but overall a fantastic holiday.

We had a wonderful time at Birk How exploring the local walks and lakes. The house was extremely well equipped. We were there in glorious sunshine but it would work equally well for a cold week with the fire lit.
