Sleeping six guests across three bedrooms, this dog-friendly property in the heart of Eskdale village is ideal for families who enjoy a quiet location surrounded by an unspoilt natural landscape.

This inviting cottage has a truly home-from-home feel, ensuring a memorable family holiday for all. Find your bearings with a trip on the Ravenglass and Eskdale Valley Railway – there’s a station less than half a mile away; steam towards inland fells or choose the sparkling coastline. Visit the Roman bathhouse museum in Ravenglass (6.5 miles), or Eskdale Mill (3 miles). Experienced hikers can take on England’s highest peak Scafell Pike (9.5 miles), or enjoy gentler family fell walks and thrilling mountain bike descents through the surrounding valleys. Go wild swimming in the cool waters of the River Esk. And find pretty Japanese gardens with a beautiful arched footbridge in hilly Giggle Alley (0.5 miles).

Step inside the hall porch of this wonderful cottage with traditional country-style interiors and gentle pops of colour in restful hues. After a day of family cycles, lake swims or market town visits, the inviting living room is the place to gather and relax on cosy seating. Warm up with the heat from the wood burner and pick favourite films or sports to watch on the Smart  TV with Sky, or on the DVD player. Or, for competitive family fun, choose board games or the Nintendo Wii console. The living room also has a quiet snug area with further seating where you can simply relax with a good book or enjoy a mindful moment by a wood burner-effect electric fire; there’s a convenient ground-floor WC too. Walk through to the open-plan kitchen and dining area to prepare evening meals. The spacious kitchen is well-equipped with colourful wall tiles, a handsome range style traditional oven/grill for cooking and electric radiators keeping the kitchen cosy, a fridge/freezer, microwave, dishwasher and washing machine. Tuck into your home-cooked meal and make plans for a new day at the dining table which seats six. Upstairs, you’ll find two beautiful double bedrooms (one has cable TV), a cosy twin bedroom with stunning fell views, and a family bathroom with a corner bath, separate shower, and WC.

Step outside to the romantic enclosed private garden with mature planting to enjoy and rugged paths to stroll, plus a seated patio area for al fresco dining  where you can sit and listen to birdsong. Children will delight in rolling down the gently sloping areas of the lawn. There’s also a convenient outbuilding by the kitchen that houses a tumble dryer. Off-road parking is available for two cars beside the cottage; further parking is available at the public car park on the hill. There are two pubs and a shop within half a mile of the cottage. From April to October, guests can also enjoy a round of golf, which is subsidised by the owners, please mention Rose Cottage when booking to receive your discount.

We had a lovely two weeks, location is perfect and The Bower House pub is wonderful and just a short walk away (torch at night though). Seascale Beach is only 7 miles away and its empty and beautiful. Wastwater is not to far with its stunning landscape and at the foot of Scafell Pike. A shop in the village. The garden is large but if you have any mRead moreobility issues its a little higgledy piggledy with very uneven steps. Although there are concrete steps at the back they are very high and steep. The location of the cottage is great for walkers. It would be a bit small for six people, having only one bathroom, but fine for four of us.. It is disappointing that there is no Aga any more as it is still featured on the website.
