Situated in a peaceful haven between sparkling coastline and rolling valley landscapes, this storybook cottage is made for families or friends who want to explore Cumbria.

Sleeping six guests, this dog-friendly cottage is ideal for families or friends who enjoy relaxed country escapes. This historic home once belonged to fishing author Hugh Falkus, and fishing enthusiasts will find more than a nod to the sport in the charming interiors, while golfers can aim for the fairways at Eskdale golf course (2.5 miles) and Seascale golf club (9 miles). You’re perfectly placed to explore the lofty peaks of the Eskdale Valley (3 miles), while Ravenglass village (3.5 miles) will delight history buffs with its Roman bathhouse and heritage railway which trundles by sea and fell views. Or dare to visit haunted Muncaster Castle and see birds of prey in flight (2.5 miles).

Admire the pretty exterior of the historic cottage before entering by the side door where you’re greeted with welcoming country style, from exposed timber beams and wall art to the warmth of an open fire – perfect after a swim in the River Esk. Store coats and boots in the hallway utility where there’s a convenient washer/dryer and dishwasher. Take a step down into the well-equipped characterful kitchen which has a sloping ceiling, and features an electric oven and hob, and fridge, plus a pantry with a freezer and microwave. Cook up a storm and tuck into home-cooked food with regional ingredients in the dining room, warmed by an Aga. Unwind by the warmth of the open fire in the living room and reflect on your day out – there’s a TV with Sky box, a DVD player, and stereo here for evening entertainment, plus lovely views towards Muncaster Fell. Admire Falkus’ paintings and photography throughout this charming home, or cosy up with a book in the study which is filled with fishing paraphernalia. There’s a handy utility room too. When night falls, head upstairs where there’s a family bathroom (with a shower over the bath, and WC), two pretty double bedrooms with brass bedsteads, and a cosy twin bedroom.

Outside, you’ll find a large lawned and sheltered walled garden, with a sloping area to one side and level areas with garden dining furniture, plus a garage for bike storage. The garden is rich in wildlife and a great spot for stargazing at nightfall. There’s an inviting pub (3.5 miles) and a shop for essentials (5 miles) a short drive away.

For Falkus acolytes, a dream come true. Cragg Cottage has a unique place in many people's angling history, mine included. Memories of the great man are everywhere in the house. Lovely cottage. Comfortable, very well equipped and furnished in a style appropriate to the building. The interior is even nicer in real life than in the photos. Lovely background heat from the Aga. The cottage was perfect for our family holiday and the arga was a bonus on wet days! Had some lovely local walks and the red squirrels we saw around the cottage were delightful. The property is in a beautiful location and is well equipped and cosy. The only thing I could suggest is that a welcome pack of bread and milk would be a good idea as we couldn't even have a cup of tea when we arrived and given that you can't enter the property until after five it was to late to find a shop by the time we had unpacked.

Cragg Cottage is a most comfortable holiday home and we had a great fortnight despite indifferent weather. The heating didn't work properly for the first couple of days. I believe this is an ongoing issue from previous comments holidaymakers have made. But we enjoyed the open fire.
