This characterful cottage comfortably sleeps four guests in two cosy bedrooms. Discover spectacular scenery in the remote wilderness of Wasdale with its poetic views of England’s deepest lake Wastwater.

Enjoy a morning’s hike of Illgill Head fell (5 miles), or the mighty Scafell Pike (8 miles), followed by a pub lunch at Santon Bridge Inn - a popular choice for banter as it’s home to the World’s Biggest Liar competition (1 mile). Try stone-skimming on the River Irt (0.5 miles), kayaking on Wastwater (5 miles), or cycle towards Seat How (7 miles) by Devoke Water. Potter around the coastal village and Roman port of Ravenglass (5 miles) with its natural harbour, shops, cafes and pubs. Hop on the La’al Ratty Heritage Steam Railway here which runs for 7 miles through the Eskdale Valley to Dalegarth (5.5 miles), near Eskdale Mill and the charming village of Boot (6 miles).

Step inside this charming cottage which has warm and inviting country-style interiors. Settle into the cosy living room after a hike on the fells and warm hands by the toasty wood burner (first basket of logs included) while you admire the ceiling’s exposed timber beams; and plan film evenings on the TV and DVD player. Rustle up light lunches or family feasts in the well-equipped kitchen and dining room which features an electric range cooker, fridge/freezer, microwave and dishwasher, plus a beautiful slate floor with cosy underfloor heating. There’s a convenient WC down some stairs from the kitchen. Head up to the first floor and enjoy some quiet reading time on the landing library; there’s also a stylish king-size bedroom, and a family bathroom with a shower over the bath and WC on this floor. Cottage style stairs to the second floor bedroom in the eaves of the house; this bright double bedroom has sloping ceilings and a large skylight, plus an extra pull-out mattress for children.

Outside, enjoy magnificent fell views from the enclosed lawned garden with outdoor seating and concrete BBQ area (please bring charcoal). There’s an outbuilding with a washer/dryer, and parking is available for one car at the front of the cottage; further parking is available on the grass verge opposite the cottage. The cottage was so charming and the views of the mountains from the garden were stunning. The kitchen was very well equipped with plenty of pots and pans. The beds were comfortable and the quality of the sheets were hotel standard. There is a record player on the landing which was broken, but my partner was able to require the speaker and get it woRead morerking so we really enioyed making use of that. We don't have pets so I was a bit conscious it was a pet friendly property but it wasnt too bad. Hide

We thoroughly enjoyed our 2 weeks at Yewbarrow Cottage. The location was great - close to Wasdale and also to a fabulous beach at Drigg. However, it is right on the road - although not noisy, you'd need to be careful with dogs or small children. The cottage itself was well-equipped, cosy and comfortable, with amazing views from the end of the gardeRead moren and the top bedroom. When the DVD player gave up the ghost the owner arranged an immediate replacement. We plan to return! Hide

We were welcomed with a bottle of wine and chocolate biscuits, a very thoughtful gesture. The cottage was lovely and clean with everything we needed for our holiday. We were very lucky to have lovely hot weather so didn't need to use the log burner and the cottage was very cool inside away from the heat. It was very enjoyable to relax in the gardenRead more with beautiful views of the hills. Hide

Yewbarrow cottage was excellent in every way. A great location. Very friendly and helpful owner. Comfortable beds , which we haven't always had in the lakes (!) We would highly recommend it to anyone and we hope to return very soon. A wonderful week. Can't recommend too highly.

Absolutely lots of kitchen utensils, pots and pans. Very comfortable double bed - did not use attic bedroom. Plenty of hot water but you will need to buy additional logs and kindling if you have the wood burner on more than 2 evenings.
