Property code: SZ560

Tucked away in the pretty village of Buttermere, this property is surrounded by stunning windswept mountains and offers fantastic walking opportunities from the leisurely to the extreme. The dramatic ridge of Red Pike, High Stile and High Crag overshadows the lake itself while on the other side of the valley Whiteless Pike, 1 mile away, and Grasmoor, 2.5 miles away, reward their climbers with yet more breath-taking elevated views. Or if you’d rather stay low, follow the footpath that runs around the perimeter of the lake before a restorative bite to eat in one of the two pubs, the cafe or ice cream parlour in the village. Meanwhile, more amenities can be found in nearby Keswick and Cockermouth, both 10 miles away.

Inside, this traditional Lakeland cottage boasts a charming blend of old and new, as original window shutters and antique furniture combine with a cosy wood burner and fresh decor. Cook and dine in the traditional kitchen, where wonderful fell views can be enjoyed from the kitchen sink. This room is equipped with an electric oven, hob, microwave, fridge, freezer and dining table for romantic meals for two. The comfortable lounge is an inviting space in which to relax and unwind after a long walk, with a newly-fitted wood burner and Freeview TV. Also on the ground floor is a bathroom with a separate shower and separate WC. Meanwhile, on the first floor, a light and airy double bedroom is furnished with antique furniture and a reading room is a peaceful space to relax on a rainy afternoon.

Opposite the cottage, an enclosed garden with a large lawn and magnificent fell views is perfect for romantic picnics. There is parking for two cars to the front of the cottage.

Location cannot be beaten. Note: there is only the wood burner for heating in the sitting room and the only place to dry clothes is the heater in the hall. The electric shower is good but in a small tray so bigger people may struggle. The owners are extremely helpful and supporting a working hill farm is part of the experience. Lovely traditional farmhouse cottage in a superb location. Everything you need for a week's walking. The big coat hooks over the storage heater in the hall are great for drying those wet waterproofs after a Lakeland downpour.

Perfect location for walking and enjoying this special part of the Lakes. Major fell walks on the doorstep + National Trust created walks at the two nearby lakes. Good local food to eat out (no shop though so you need to be stocked up before). Cottage not centrally heated - might be a problem in winter, though localised heating is available.
