Wonderfully secluded cottage close to the lake and village; enjoy dark, starry skies at night and days exploring walks and cycles in every direction from this comfortable cottage.

Buttermere village is made up of two pubs, a café, farm and ice cream parlour and the occasional sheep trotting past. The shingled shores of Buttermere lake are just a few minutes’ walk from the cottage and the 4-mile circuit around the lake is a delightful child-friendly walk taking in beautiful surroundings. Keswick, 10 miles away, offers plenty for the whole family; hire a rowing boat, take a cruise on the Keswick Launch, enjoy a performance at Theatre by the Lake or try the local fare in one of the town's many eateries. Adventure enthusiasts will love the Honister Slate Mine, 4 miles, with unique mine tours and a Via Ferrata which is just a few minutes' drive up the Honister Pass. Explore mountain biking trails and a ‘Go Ape’ High Wire Adventure at Whinlatter Forest Park, 10 miles away.

In a stunning location, this eco-friendly cottage sleeps eight people in four bedrooms in elegant comfort and style. Enter into the comfortable and spacious living room, enjoying views to the lake. Two large sofas are placed in front of the wood burner, ideal for snuggling down as the night draws in. There is no TV and limited mobile signal, but there is reliable, high speed Wi-Fi and a bluetooth speaker. If you’re looking for a digital detox the owners have provided plenty of interesting books for all ages and a very well stocked cupboard of board games, playing cards and jigsaws to keep everyone occupied!

The kitchen has an electric oven and separate hob, microwave, fridge and dishwasher and with direct access to the garden, you can let the fresh air breeze in. Off the kitchen is large pantry/utility room with a full-size freezer and washing machine. The dining room seats eight at the large table, perfect for sociable mealtimes. A useful addition for large parties is the spacious cloakroom/drying room, perfect for storing outdoor gear and muddy boots. The ground floor is completed with a stylish king-size bedroom with a lovely window to enjoy the panoramic views. The en-suite wet room has a walk-in power shower. On the first floor, there is a single bedroom, a family bedroom containing a double and a single bed and a king-size bedroom that can be made up as twin on request. All the bedrooms have ample storage and are serene in a neutral palette complemented by pretty textiles. Consideration has been given to those on a group holiday, with a bathroom, a shower room and a separate WC completing the first floor.

Outside, the large garden is surrounded by traditional dry stone walls and Herdwick sheep are regular visitors to the garden so don't worry if you see them in there – they'll find their way out again! Children should be watched around the unfenced stream, which is home to small trout and great for floating paper boats and there is a large picnic table perfect for making the most of the weather. There is a large wooden deck with a porch and a bench for taking in the outstanding view, dining alfresco with a BBQ at the end of the day. If you are feeling adventurous then there are 2 paddleboards available for use throughout your stay and the surrounding grounds provide plenty of space for den-making for the little ones.

We are just back from an exceptional stay at this beautiful cottage. It turned out to be the perfect location for our group. We walked straight out of the house. Swam several times in beautiful Buttermere lake and even made use of one of the paddle boards that are kindly provided. We shall return. Thank you

Bowderbeck is a beautiful cottage in a stunning location. The walks directly from the door are wonderful and varied. The cottage was warm and cosy in November and a great pleasure to return to after a day out in the fells. The drying room was excellent for all our wet boots and jackets!

The grandchildren loved the garden seeing the sheep and playing in the little stream seeing fish and eels. We had some issues with the hot water system but this was sorted as soon as was possible.
