Property code: SZ330

Families and couples will adore this beautiful country cottage nestled amongst the breathtaking landscape of the Lake District National Park, where you can immerse yourselves in the rural tranquillity or visit a nearby bustling town.

Sitting in a gloriously remote location at the mouth of St John’s-in-the-Vale, this delightful cottage is well-placed to make the most of the Lake District’s offerings. The lakes make an excellent setting for a leisurely stroll or a more strenuous hike, all with something different to offer. Go nature spotting - Bassenthwaite is well-known for its nesting ospreys - and you can hire a rowing boat or hop on the steamer at Derwentwater. Outdoor capital, Keswick, sits on the northern shores of Derwentwater with its independent shops, eateries and outdoor specialists. Keen walkers/cyclists will be pleased that Blencathra, Helvellyn and Skiddaw are also nearby, where a range of routes and trails lead to spectacular views. Grasmere is also worth a visit for its gingerbread and Wordsworth connections.

This stunning, sympathetically restored cottage built in the 1500s is immaculately presented. Original features, such as exposed beams and flagstone floors, have been effortlessly combined with contemporary décor to create a homely cottage feel. The lounge/diner is at the hub of the house with a wood burner and comfortable sofas for snuggling up of an evening. There is ample seating for everyone around the dining table, whether you’re eating, playing or planning! The kitchen is well-equipped, whilst the utility room is a welcome addition for storing muddy boots. Completing the ground floor is the family bathroom. From the kitchen, head up the stairs to the first floor. Here you’ll find the king-size bedroom with stunning views of Skiddaw, and the twin room with views of the garden, both of which are spacious and tastefully decorated.

Outside, there is a large orchard-style garden. There are several places to sit quietly or dine al fresco, whilst enjoying the beautiful views. The sound of the stream running through the garden will also add to the sense of calm and relaxation.

  • 2 bedrooms – 1 king-size and 1 twin
  • 1 bathroom with shower over the bath and WC
  • Built-in oven, halogen hobs, microwave, dishwasher and under-counter fridge
  • Utility room – washing machine, tumble dryer and freezer
  • Wood burner – initial basket of logs provided
  • TV, DVD, CD/radio with i-pod dock
  • Towels not included
  • Large orchard style garden, partially enclosed with various seating area and a small stream (children to be supervised at all times)
  • Please note that, due to the angle of the drive, a dog may be able to get under the driveway gate, so the garden is not fully secure for dogs
  • The water supply for this property comes from a spring on the fells that is filtered and checked on an annual basis
  • Pub 2 miles
  • Off road parking for 3 cars on driveway
  • This property will be decorated for Christmas

We loved our stay here. Lowthwaite Cottage is the perfect Lake District escape, with amazing views from the garden and great walks from the house. The cottage has everything you could need for a comfortable stay. We had both Christmas and my mum's 60th here in one week and we loved it.

The location is great for an active family but the house was a let down, it has so much potential but needs to be cleaned thoroughly as was musty and dusty which is not great for my asthmatic daughter so we cleaned everything. We had such an amazing time! We loved the cottage : so cozy and warm with beautiful views. The whole family enjoyed walks in the mornings and returning to our lovely cottage was part of the experience of the Lakes. Nothing was missing. Thank you for the Easter gifts waiting for us. Such a kind gesture. We are hoping to return.

Beautiful cottage in a stunning location. Sunsets are amazing, scenery wonderful great holiday. Garden is not quite small dog proof but as long as you keep an eye on them it's really big and great for the dogs. Cottage is what you would expect from a very old building, cool but pretty much perfect in every way!

This cottage was everything we had hoped for. Actually, we didnt find a place more beautiful in the Lake District than St. Johns in the Vale. We love the views from the garden and the walks that one can do just from the house. Also, a lot of places of interest are within easy reach from the house.

We were disgusted to find kitchen utensils with pasta and cheese left on in the cupboards, obviously had not been checked in the cleaning of the house. Dusty cobwebs around the house. Very lapse on cleaning between guests We were disappointed we could not walk safely from the cottage as you had to walk down a busy road quite some way with no path.
