Property code: SZ380

Great for adults, this home sits in the exceptionally peaceful village of Applethwaite and oozes character, with charming spaces inside and out to relax in after days out exploring.

Enjoy lakeside adventures by travelling 3 miles to Bassenthwaite Lake or Derwentwater. The bustling town of Keswick (2 miles) is a great starting point. Board a boat from the local launch and hop on and off to explore or hire your own boat and call in at pretty lakeside villages. Keswick is also home to an independent cinema and the Theatre by the Lake, so you can enjoy a night away from the cottage and the kitchen. If you fancy a walk, stroll 3 miles to Castlerigg Stone Circle, which sits high above the town and boasts wonderful views.

Make your way down the path which goes through the tiered garden before stepping inside. The first lounge has oak beams and a collection of artwork and period features surrounding a cosy wood burner. Spend a moment watching TV or throw open the French doors to let the breeze inside. Ascend three steps to the kitchen/diner where you can admire views of Catbells and Causey Pike. With a gas oven and hob, microwave and fridge, enjoy cooking in this charming, farmhouse-style kitchen. This room is brimming with characterful features and has a table for four so you can enjoy dining together. A freezer can be found in a nearby utility cupboard in the corridor. With no TV, the second lounge is perfect for enjoying some peace and quiet. There is a wood burner to keep you warm, a comfortable sofa and armchair and a table perfect for games nights. It is flooded with natural light and boasts lovely views of the Western Fells. The two bedrooms – one super-king-size and one king-size - are cute and cosy. They share the Jack and Jill bathroom with walk-in shower and WC. Both doors lock from the inside so that one bedroom can have sole use of the bathroom. You will also find a family bathroom with a bath and WC so you can enjoy a soak after adventurous days.

Spend time in the enclosed back garden where steps lead to a patio with table and chairs. More steps lead to the pretty summer house where you can get cosy if there is a chill in the air. Take care as the garden is set over different levels with steps in between. There is off-road parking for one car.

Lots of cobwebs and signs of damp. Ornaments on walls a bit off putting. Couldn't open lounge french doors which was disappointing. Lovely garden

The views from Owl Cottage are stunning and the garden is so well cared for. Really nice layered design with multiple gorgeous seating areas. Comfy beds and very spacious inside. We would have found it more comfortable had there been a washing machine to dry clothes and somewhere to dry things.

Superb cottage in a very quite village. Well equipped and clean with a nice garden to sit in with great views. Easy access to Keswick and surrounding areas. Skidaw is within walking distance too.

Outstanding views, gardens and lovely interior that you cannot fail to appreciate. Handy for Keswick and Northern Lakes and a place we thoroughly enjoy staying. Parking could be improved but very few places reach the standard of Owl Cottage!

A very good base for kayaking the northern lakes. We kayaked on Bassenthwaite, Crummock Water, Derwent Water and Thirlmere. A lovely cottage in a pretty village with amazing views, within easy reach of Keswick, but small enough not to get too busy. The garden is stunning!

The contents of the cottage were an engaging educational experience in themselves which we were fascinated by during our holiday close to our local home. The cottage and garden were light and airy with enough headroom to accommodate my 62 stature.

Absolutely beautiful house and garden. Two cosy living rooms and nicely lit kitchen to cook in. Bed is probably the most comfortable Ive ever slept in and huge. 25 min walk into Keswick centre by road or fields. 10 min walk to the start of the Skiddaw climb. Loved it and intend to return in the summer months.

The most perfect retreat in a stunning spot at the foot of the mountains. Ideal for walkers, easy access to Latrigg and an enjoyable walk into Keswick across the fields. The cottage itself was full of character and thoughtful touches. We stayed at Christmas and it felt very festive.

We really enjoyed a week in Owl Cottage. We were very pleasantly surprised with the size of the cottage, the photos are lovely but they do not do it justice! The location was great being so close to Keswick and the Northern Fells. The property was quirkily decorated and if clean, would have been perfect. Patches of black mold in the bathrooms and bedrooms aggravated asthma. The age of the property means that the bathrooms could do with updating but they were serviceable. The wood-burning stoves worked bRead morerilliantly at heating the cottage and provided a very cozy atmosphere. Hide
