Set in the lush farmland of the southern Lake District, this characterful house dates back to the 17th century, and is a wonderful holiday base for a group or larger family exploring the Cumbria countryside.

Surrounded by impressive fells, the house is a fantastic base for keen walkers exploring the beautiful countryside to the south of the Lake District National Park. Nearby landmarks and attractions include the Sir John Barrow Monument (3 miles), the South Lakes Safari Zoo (7 miles) and the Duddon Mosses National Nature Reserve (4.5 miles). The nearest lakes are Coniston Water (6.5 miles) and Windermere (10 miles), providing opportunities for wild swimming, water sports, and a cruise across the lake on a historic steamship. Also nearby is the thriving town of Ulverston (3.5 miles), the birthplace of Stan Laurel and the home of the famous Laurel and Hardy Museum, along with a great range of friendly restaurants, cafes, shops, pubs and an independent cinema.

Entering this cosy property, the large boot room provides a warm welcome, with its original slate flooring, feature fireplace, and plenty of space for coats and shoes. The spacious lounge is full of character, with exposed wooden ceiling beams, plenty of seating and an open fire. Opening out onto the garden, the lounge is an ideal space to unwind in, and there’s also a smart TV if you want to relax in the evening with a favourite movie and an upright piano for family sing-a-longs.

Exploring further, the kitchen is fully equipped with an electric oven and hob, microwave and slim-line dishwasher, with a washing machine, tumble dryer and WC in the nearby utility room. An arch leads into the impressive light-filled dining room has beautiful wooden beams, windows looking out to the garden, a feature fireplace and a dining table perfect for a special family meal and another doorway heading into the hall.

The traditional wood-panelled staircase leads up to the five cosy and relaxing first-floor bedrooms. There are two double rooms, both overlooking the garden, one with a feature fireplace and window seat. The charming single room also overlooks the garden, while the lovely twin room has plenty of storage space. The king-size room has a large picture window and a refreshing en-suite bathroom with corner bath and WC. There’s also a stylish first-floor family bathroom complete with a shower over the bath and a WC.

Going outside, the spacious garden features some delightful lawn areas and a couple of pretty seating areas complete with a range of outdoor furniture including deck chairs, providing an ideal spot for sitting back in the sun with a glass or two of wine. The garden is also visited by a variety of wildlife, so you may spot the occasional hedgehog or barn owl.

The cottage has ample off-road parking and a EV charge pint which is available at no extra cost. There is also a covered bike storage area with space for 10 cycles. Please remember to keep gates closed at all times – a herd of dairy cows passes by the cottage each day to the neighbouring farm.

Wonderful quirky farmhouse. Our 2nd stay here as a family with 2 grandchildren who couldn't wait each day to watch the cows go past for milking. The house offers everything you want for a stay in the area. Ps don't worry about the cobwebs they add to the character of the house. Would recommend a stay

This is an amazing, historically interesting house in a beautiful location in the South lakes. It is very spacious and had lots of quality cooking equipment as well as washing and drying machines if you should need them. The garden was particularly lovely. The owners are working hard to restore the original lime plaster dating from the 1600s, and tRead morehe furniture is in keeping with the style of the house. I would definitely recommend this place for large groups visiting the lakes. Hide

We have just returned from the most wonderful stay at Nether House with all our family. We were 4 generations and the accommodation was perfect. The kitchen has everything needed including baking equipment, good knives and plenty of crockery. Bed linen and towels are top quality and there were loads of games and books available. When we arrived theRead morere was complimentary apple juice and milk in the fridge. We lacked for absolutely nothing and look forward to a longer stay soon. Many thanks. Hide
