The town is the birthplace of the poet William Wordsworth, and a visit to the area wouldn’t be complete without a potter around Wordsworth House and Garden (0.5 miles). Just 8 miles away is Whinlatter Forest and Park, home of Go Ape, which makes a fantastic family day out. Whinlatter is home to stunning views, excellent walks, mounting biking and rare wildlife. Beyond Whinlatter in the Adventure Capital of England is popular Keswick where you can sample the retail and foodie delights. Alternatively, hop in the car and head to the coast (8 miles) for remote beaches and windswept clifftop paths.

To the rear of the cottage is the stylish kitchen, with fabulous slate worktops and sleek units. The kitchen is equipped with a Range-style electric oven with a gas hob, microwave, fridge/freezer, and a handy dishwasher. Two steps take you from here to the bright and airy breakfast room, which has a beautiful wooden table with benches, where you can spread out all your maps and guidebooks to plan your day’s itinerary over breakfast. A further two steps take you from here to a little snug, with two armchairs, where you can steal a few quiet moments with a newspaper and a cup of tea. Finally, completing the ground floor is a handy shower room with a WC.
Heading upstairs, you’ll find two of the four bedrooms. There’s a delightful twin and a king-size bedroom that looks out over the rooftops to the countryside beyond.
