Property code: SZ600

This idyllic rural retreat is perfect for small families and couples looking to get away from it all. Take long walks in the surrounding fells and enjoy day trips to Lake District attractions such as Windermere and Coniston Water.

The remote cottage, just outside the sleepy hamlet of Oxen Park, dates back 250 years and exudes character. Surrounded by open countryside and with a large, mature garden, it’s the ideal place to get close to nature and forget the stresses of everyday life. Head deep into the Rusland Valley for long hikes through open moorland and woodland or get the adrenaline pumping with a bike ride through Grizedale Forest (5 miles). Windermere, one of the jewels in the Lake District crown, is just 10 miles away. As England’s largest lake, the scenery is quite spectacular, especially when viewed from one of the iconic steamers, heritage steam railway or high above the lake on one of the nearby fells.

Enter the beautiful, detached cottage via the sunroom, which is the ideal place for storing all your muddy boots and outdoor gear, as well as sipping your morning coffee. From here, move into the exquisite kitchen/diner. This spacious area is full of character, with slate flooring, exposed beams and an ornamental stone fireplace housing a cosy wood burner and Smart TV. The heart of the home has been designed with socialising in mind, with a large oval table to enjoy mealtimes together or sit with a glass of wine to chat whilst the dinner is cooking on the induction hob or in the range-style oven. There is also a dishwasher in the kitchen and washing machine. A step from the kitchen leads down to the fabulous lounge. This room is bathed in natural light, thanks to the triple-aspect windows, and has an impressive, vaulted ceiling. A sofa and two armchairs are arranged around a roaring wood burner and there is also an antique rocking chair to relax in with a good book. Heading upstairs, you’ll find the two elegantly decorated double bedrooms, which both boast wonderful countryside views and have a wardrobe and drawers for storing all your belongings. The cottage also has two bathrooms, one with a shower and WC and the other with a bath – perfect for soaking aching limbs after a long walk in the fells – and a WC.

The mature garden has a large lawn and pretty trees, creating a tranquil spot to escape the humdrum of everyday life and making a fantastic playground for four-legged visitors. Dine alfresco on the picnic bench, wildlife watching and looking out over the open countryside. There is parking for two cars on the driveway directly outside the cottage.

We really enjoyed staying at Low Longmire Cottage. It was as so unbelievably peaceful and tranquil. Probably less than 10 cars went by all week. A great base for loads of activities in the Lakes plus lots of opportunities for local walks and nearby pubs. For supplies, Booths supermarket is in Ulverston and is such a fantastic shop. I loved the decoRead morer in the cottage and everything was comfortable and homely. A wonderful basket of goodies was included and the hosts made us feel valued and welcomed. Hide

The owner of Low Longmire Cottage, has supplied the property with 'special additions' not commonly found in holiday lets. For example electric blankets to keep us senior citizens warm in bed during the cold winter months and razors and shaving foam for the absent minded male guests.

Low Longmire is a charming cottage inside and out with a character all of its own. We had the pleasure of watching the garden burst into bloom while we were there and the new nest box was being used by blue tits who were feeding chicks. The quality of the fixtures and fittings and equipment was very good with a quirky mixture of modern and antique Read morefurniture. The views of mountain and field, woods and flowers from every window plus the peace and tranquillity made our holiday perfect. Hide
