Take a break with the family or a group of friends in a quintessential Lakeland cottage that’s steeped in history. Fantastic walking beckons in all directions with Lingmoor Fell (2 miles), Pike O'Blisco (4 miles) and Bow Fell (5.6 miles) to the north, whilst to the south, you can explore Wetherlam (4 miles) and Swirl How (5.4 miles). The River Brathay is just 150 metres from the property, with Slater’s Bridge - a 17th-century stone crossing built for pedestrians and packhorses - 500 metres away and the northern tip of Lake Windermere is reached in 4.5 miles. A range of shops and eateries can be found at Ambleside, such as The Drunken Duck Inn (4.3 miles), Grasmere (4 miles on foot, 9 miles by car), or in Bowness (10 miles). Complimentary passes are included for The Langdale Hotel & Spa (3 miles).

Stepping inside the hall, you’ll pass the ground-floor bathroom and a kitchen with a slate floor, cosy underfloor heating and granite surfaces. Across the hall is the open plan lounge/dining room; a lovely space to hunker down in the chillier evenings, this room has a striking stone fireplace and a wood burner, oak beams and stripped wooden floors and is equipped with a selection of games, books and guides of the area. Upstairs, there are two bedrooms (a king-size and a single) with one double bedroom found downstairs; all three are furnished sympathetically to reflect the age of the property, in the style of a bygone era.

Outside, there’s an elevated seating area with landscaping making use of the local slate, greenery and foliage indigenous to the area — natural steps lead up to the seating area.

  • Slaters Cottage can accommodate up to 5 guests, in 3 bedrooms, if desired - an additional dining chair can be found in the bathroom

This property was dirty, very poorly maintained and the oil boiler smelt extremely strongly in one bedroom making it very uncomfortable to use.

Lovely location which was a hit with my children as they could play in the Ford. The beds were comfortable and most things we needed were available. It does feel however that the cottage needs a really good spring clean and not just a surface clean. It was great that we could take our dogs but there was no vacuum or long handled brush to clear Read moreup the inevitable dust and fur that dogs make. A bedroom fan would be useful as the front bedroom was very warm even with the windows open. The use of the local spa is an added bonus especially with children. The garden is tiny and not secure for dogs or very young children but the quiet location is a bonus. Hide

Slaters Cottage is in a beautiful location, though beyond that is a basic but cosy cottage. A little more care and attention would bring it up to a higher standard and recycling facilities would be appreciated.

Brilliant location but that is all. Not clean, in poor shape overall and leisure facilities closed for refurb with no advance warning.

Firstly we had a great week at Slaters Cottage. Location is fantastic with plenty of walks straight from the house. Cottage was warm and generally comfortable. On the more negative side the cottage was not well equipped and there was quite limited information about the local area, recycling, amenities etc. Also the boiler was in one of the bedroomsRead more had a faint smell of oil - mangeable for us but might be offputting for some people. Overall positives outweighed the negatives but would be great witha few tweaks. Hide

Unfortunately, my review of the property would be a 1.5 star, amazing property, and views, great walks nearby but the positives stop there. This property should not be classed as dog-friendly as my dog was over the wall (was 6 inches so a wall from the road, but not a wall from the garden side) within minutes, not a safe or secure area for dogs to Read morego to the toilet off lead or anything. This property is in a wonderful location in the heart of the Lake District. If you love walking it's ideal as there are many wonderful walks straight from the door. It is also easy to get to nearby Ambleside, Grasmere and Coniston, each with wonderful walking options as well as other attractions.

We had a wonderful stay at Slaters Cottage- the perfect cosy Lakeland retreat! The kitchen is very well equipped with everything we needed. The access road is small but we were fine with a van and it was well worth it for early morning and evening peaceful paddles in the river!

The cottage was great, the location amazing. We did have a problem with the electrics but you kindly resolved in a day (thanks again). We loved our holiday but would have appreciated more info about the location...ie on a single track road which ends in a ford. Not a deal breaker but its good to manage expectations

Our stay at at Slaters Cottage was quite simply one of the best holidays we have had. The cottage is set in a stunning location with so many beautiful routes to walk locally. The cottage itself is the perfect blend of a cosy, traditional, olde world cottage but with modern facilities and the kitchen in particular is exceptionally well stocked with Read moreall the equipment that a family would need. The log fire made the ambience in the evening really blissful but the central heating was much appreciated on the cold nights. The communication from Original Cottages was also exceptional. We will definitely be returning for another short break very soon. Hide
