Situated on a Lakeland hill farm with a Grade II-listed farmhouse, this beautiful barn conversion makes a fabulous base for families exploring the valley of Deepdale between Ullswater (2 miles to the north) and Brotherswater (1.5 miles south). A haven for walkers, local peaks include Helvellyn, St Sunday Crag and Stony Cove Pike (all within 6.5 miles). From the thriving village of Glenridding (2.5 miles) a steamer will take you across Ullswater, with stops along the way so you can view the Aira Force Waterfall and visit the bustling lakeside villages of Howtown and Pooley Bridge, where you will find plenty of welcoming pubs and restaurants. Heading north, Penrith (17 miles) has some great places to eat and drink.

On entering the property head upstairs via the wooden staircase to the first floor where you will find the beautiful open-plan lounge/kitchen/diner with glorious views overlooking the meadows, fells and fields of the surrounding countryside. The cosy lounge is at one end of the room, with plenty of comfortable seating, a welcoming wood burner, TV and DVD, making this an ideal space to relax in. The lounge also has original exposed stonework and an antique bookcase with an impressive collection of old books including a 1902 edition of Encyclopedia Britannica. Exploring the gorgeous living area further, the fresh and spacious dining area provides an ideal spot for everyone to gather, chat about the day and share a favourite family meal. The stylishly designed kitchen features a range of equipment including a split oven with electric hob, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, microwave and washing machine. Set beneath a vaulted ceiling with skylights and with stunning views, this lovely room makes a wonderful space to unwind in. The first floor also has a shower room complete with walk-in shower and WC. Returning to the ground floor, the main corridor provides plenty of space for leaving coats and boots. This floor houses the two bright and tastefully decorated bedrooms: a king-size room and a twin room, as well as a bathroom complete with a shower over the bath and a WC.

French doors open onto the foothills of St Sunday Crag, or you can spend a lazy afternoon in the private fenced patio which is accessed via the barn doors. There’s plenty of seating here, ideal for enjoying a morning coffee or a glass of wine in the evening. As the property is set on a working farm, there’s plenty of farm residents to spot, including Indian runner ducks and a peacock. Parking is available on the cobbles to the front of the property, and there’s also lock-up storage available for bikes.

10/10 - had the best time, remote -ish location with excellent walks. Lovely hosts - Chris and Jimmy (father and Son) were very welcoming and friendly. The cottage itself was excellent - the log burner made it even better.

The cottage was excellent. And the location, for us, was superb as it was right beside all the walks we wanted to do. The owners were lovely, very approachable and helpful. The cottage is on a working farm, so theres plenty of animals around. We will definitely be going back to The Byre for more holidays.
