Set out on foot from the property to enjoy a leisurely stroll along the coast, sit and enjoy the coastal scenery or walk through the pretty village of Ravenglass, stopping to admire the views of Muncaster Fell along the way. Ravenglass, now a UNESCO world heritage site, was once an important Roman port and military fort but is now best known as the starting point for the Ravenglass and Eskdale narrow gauge steam railway. It is also home to two pubs, a hotel, a cafe, a children’s park, a post office and the meeting place of three rivers. For history, visit Muncaster Castle, 1.5 miles away, set in beautiful grounds with a Hawk and Owl Centre plus the recently opened Weapons Hall. For cycling, choose between the steep roads of the Eskdale Valley and the low-level forest tracks of the Eskdale Trail. Locally there are many wonderful walks to suit all abilities, for example Wasdale,10 miles away, with its breathtaking views and boasting England’s highest mountain, deepest lake, smallest church and arguably Britain’s favourite view. Additionally, you can enjoy walks along the sandy beaches at Drigg and Seascale. Ravenglass is on the coastal main railway line, take the train to the seaside villages of Seascale or St Bees or visit the historic harbour town of Whitehaven.

This spacious and beautifully maintained property offers a delightful blend of old and new, boasting original stained-glass windows, feature fireplaces, a cosy wood burner and fresh modern decor. The property opens into a generous and sociable kitchen, equipped with a range oven, gas hobs, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, microwave, nespresso coffee maker and small breakfast table. Find all the equipment you need to prepare tasty and lavish dishes for all the family to enjoy in the separate dining room, with its feature fireplace and helpful map of the area for planning the following days adventures. An elegant lounge with a warming wood burner is furnished with inviting sofas and fitted with a Smart TV. Upstairs are two light and airy bedrooms: one elegant king-size with a wrought-iron bed, feature fireplace and antique furniture, and one twin which can be made up as a supper king on request, also with a feature fireplace. The bedrooms share a nautically themed bathroom with a beautiful Victorian free-standing bath and spacious separate shower.

Outside, a delightful front garden is a peaceful spot for al fresco dining with a view of the estuary. To the rear, renovated outbuildings house the washing machine, tumble dryer and WC and provide lockable storage space for bikes or kayaks. There is car parking in a designated area to rear of the property.

The Retreat is an excellent holiday cottage in the lovely location of Ravenglass. The house is welcoming, very comfortable and well-equipped.
