Just north of the lake, the Lakes Distillery produces artisan whisky, gin and vodka and runs fascinating tours concluded with a trip to the tasting room for a quick tipple. Keen walkers will enjoy the challenge of nearby Skiddaw, 14 miles away, with its heather-clad slopes and magnificent elevated views. Or, for a change of scene, head 14 miles north to reach the Solway Coast, home to nature reserves and sandy beaches.
