Property code: OC-SZ057

Located in the north of the Lake District, close to the market town of Keswick, this delightful cottage blends original features with a contemporary finish to create a comfortable, characterful home. Tucked away in the village of Bassenthwaite, it’s only a few miles from popular Bassenthwaite Lake, a wetlands nature reserve where resident ospreys often nest. Head to the far side of the lake to discover Whinlatter Forest, which has a network of walking and cycling trails as well as a Go Ape for kids. The Lake District Wildlife Park is another great family day out, home to lemurs, otters, and zebras. Prefer something more adventurous? Try climbing magnificent Skiddaw or Blencathra, escaping the crowds by using the lesser-known northern routes to reach their peaks.

On entering the property you’ll find yourself in the cosy, open-plan living area, where exposed beams and traditional furniture create a country-cottage feel. There is comfortable seating around the wood burner, which is perfect for colder evenings, whilst a table with seating for four provides somewhere to eat, play games, or plan the next day’s adventure. A floor-to-ceiling window frames the beautiful surroundings and lets light flood into the room. The kitchen space is compact but has everything you’ll need for simple self-catering, including a Belfast sink, a cooker, a fridge, and a microwave. Under the stairs in the hallway, you’ll also find a washing machine and a freezer. Upstairs, there are two bedrooms - one double and one twin - both of which are light and airy with lovely country views. Completing the accommodation is a family bathroom with a roll-top bath and separate shower.

Directly outside the property, there is a bench overlooking the rugged surroundings, an ideal spot for a morning coffee. The owners have also developed another outside space which they call The Allotment, to get here you cross the stream and follow the small path. More of a garden than an allotment, it’s a haven of tranquillity, with a summer house, seating, views of Skiddaw, and even some hens. For younger children, there are swings and a river with ducks just around the corner. On-site parking is available for one car, with further parking located around the corner.

  • 2 bedrooms – 1 double and 1 twin
  • 1 bathroom – separate bath and shower
  • Electric cooker, microwave, fridge, freezer, washing machine
  • Wood burner - logs provided
  • Smart TV , radio/CD player
  • Wi-Fi included
  • Garden and use of the ''allotment,' which is accessed over a stream and along a little path - care must be taken with children
  • Parking for 1 car, roadside parking nearby
  • Pub within 500 metres
  • Short breaks available from a Friday or a Monday during November – March
  • This property will be decorated for Christmas
  • Arrival: 15:00 onwards

The Barn is an absolute delight! It is an easy, welcoming and comfortable home. Lovely homely and cosy cottage that is well equipped with everything you might need. Owners live next door and were very welcoming but not intrusive. The first time we entered we fell in love with the house. Everything is arranged with a lot of love, the beds are very comfortable and on the opposite of the street there are enough sheep which you can count until you get asleep. Everything I look for in a cottage. Great location, clean and comfortable, with stunning views from the bedrooms. Arrived to a warm welcome from the owner. One of the easiest wood-burning stoves to keep alight, which was perfect to relax in front of after a day of hiking.

A lovely very quiet village. Great location for the north lakes. Small outside roadside space/garden to the front of the cottage but the road is quiet. Lovely views from the front. Compact but adequate for four adults or couple and children. Basics such as beds, small shower and cleanliness are fine. Very traditional in decoration with a lot of cluRead moretter.
