This rustic single-storey cottage, one of four on the same complex, makes a quaint and cosy base for exploring the Lake District National Park. It’s in a peaceful spot with walking and cycling trails all around. There’s no shortage of things to do nearby – from meeting exotic animals at the Lake District Wildlife Park (7 miles) to sipping handcrafted spirits at The Lakes Distillery (7.5 miles). Step back in time at Mirehouse and Gardens (10 miles), or wander through the bird-filled wetlands of Dubwath Silver Meadows Nature Reserve (8.5 miles). Fancy something a little different? Tuck into afternoon tea aboard a restored 1930s carriage at the Bassenthwaite Lake Station and Carriage Cafe (8 miles), or head to Alpacaly Ever After (7.5 miles) for cuddly encounters and the chance to adopt your own alpaca or llama. However you like to explore – on foot, two wheels, or four – you’re in the right place.

On arrival, step inside the welcoming entrance hall and find coat hooks and a boot tray, perfect for shedding your outdoor gear. Off to the right is a twin bedroom, and a little further along, you’ll reach a modern shower room with a WC. Next door is the double bedroom, complete with a striking wooden four-poster bed for a touch of romance. Continue on and you’ll arrive at the heart of the home – a country-style kitchen/diner with exposed ceiling beams and warm wooden units. Two steps lead down to the lounge, where you can curl up in front of the wood burner or catch a film on the Smart TV. The decor throughout is delightfully homely and welcoming, with floral curtains, frilly details and vintage furnishings.

French doors open onto a small, enclosed patio with outdoor seating, which is a real suntrap when the weather’s good. Guests can also enjoy access to a shared lawn with a BBQ area – ideal for relaxation (and possibly some socialising) on summer evenings. There’s parking for up to two cars on-site.

This is a treasure of a discovery in the foothills of the Northern Lakes. Beautiful peaceful location and the actual cottage is immaculate, really comfortable and well equipped. Pretty much home from home. We shall certainly stay here whenever we need to be up in Cumberland. Really friendly and helpful owners too; can't recommend it highly enoughRead more. Hide
