Property code: OC-GL046

This charming stone-built property sits in a peaceful hillside location, one of four buildings that make up an historic farm estate, in the Loughrigg and Skelwith Bridge area just outside of Ambleside. Ideal for a restful and restorative family break, there are scenic walks from the property’s doorstep – pretty Loughrigg Tarn is an easy climb, while the hike up Loughrigg Fell is more challenging but rewards you with wonderful open views. Lively, historic Ambleside, just over 2 miles away, is well served with shops, cafes, restaurants and a cinema, and is a popular base for exploring the central Lake District. Just a short walk from the town is the spectacular, 20m-high Stock Ghyll Force waterfall, which runs downhill and passes under Ambleside’s much-photographed Bridge House. Just south of the town, at Waterhead, there’s a ferry service across Lake Windermere, the boat trip making exploring the wider Windermere area an even greater adventure.

A handsome, cosy farmhouse, this property offers home-from-home comforts as well as period charm. The lounge is made bright with high ceilings and large windows on two sides, and warmed by an open fire. Sofa and armchair seating around the fire and TV invite snug evenings in after blustery fellside walks. A smart country kitchen with recently updated appliances provides holiday cooking and laundry facilities. From the kitchen, two steps lead down to an elegant dining room, where a dining table and chairs are positioned by a wood burner and a large feature window with leafy garden views. On the first floor, you’ll find three bedrooms – one king-size and two singles – and a family bathroom with a shower over the bath.

Outdoors, a large garden provides a terrific run-around and relaxation space, enjoying the tranquil country views afforded by the elevated position. Unwind on the outdoor seating and watch the water feature or the stream that runs through the garden.

We had such a wonderful stay and loved Ellers Close. The location is fabulous, so peaceful, and it proved a great base for exploring the local fells. The house is very warm, clean and comfortable, with beautiful views from every window. Our children loved the garden and we all enjoyed watching the birds at the feeders. We hope to return and would nRead moreot hesitate to recommend the place to others. Hide

Lovely cottage, lovely en losed garden in a beautiful location with many walks. Ambleside, Bo'ness and Coniston all within a few minutes drive. The addition of garden furniture would have made it perfect during the warm days/evenings.

The location of the cottage was excellent. It was warm but lacked some of the homely touches that would have made it feel more comfortable. The layout and standard of furnishings was adequate but felt a bit thrown together! Cleanliness was ok but floors were not terribly clean.

Review: Excellent property, Well described, and a wonderful location. Cosy period cottage, with everything you'd need. Garden well enclosed for dogs, once the gate is closed. Bedrooms roomy. Excellent bathroom and modern kitchen. Plenty of local guide-books/ maps to hand. (One containing some history of the cottage "Life in Langdale". Despite beinRead moreg a period cottage, was easy to keep warm. Will return. Note to Original Cottages: Would be good if we could have had a later checkout, especially as no-one was coming that day, and the cleaners didn't arrive at 10am. Also too many signs pinned to all the cupboards / bookshelves saying "don't use as this won't be cleaned". Not sure what that meant, but pointless, and over the top. A book is a book, and part of the property experience (ie the local guidebooks/ history of the valley etc. The signs should be removed, and they are unsightly in a period cottage. Also Original Cottages had put up a sign saying to check-out at 9am above the cooker, despite the property guide at the property saying 11am, and the booking saying 10am. Finally, there are two key lockers in the wood-shed, which was confusing, as I couldn't open the first one, and found the second one (containing the key) by chance in the dark. It's on the left wall next to the light switch. Details should be updated, As should the fact that you should enter the property via the kitchen and not the "front-door". Thanks Hide

Great location and Garden, lovely cottage, with everything you need, just got let down by the standard of cleanliness, found previous occupants food remains in the dishwasher, and lots of dust and cobwebs especially in the lounge and two large piles of dog mess on the lower lawned area. When we stripped off the bed as requested, we were horrified tRead moreo see heavy staining on the mattress protector. Hide
