Enjoy time in the fresh air on the clematis-covered terrace before exploring your fabulous surroundings and boarding a boat.

Leave the car behind and stroll about Wray Castle and its grounds which are owned by the National Trust. Admire the church-like interiors and panoramic views and let little ones spend time in the outdoor play area before tucking into something tasty in the cafe. Stay close to home and jump on a boat from the Wray Castle jetty to cruise the water and take in the fantastic scenery. If you fancy a day out a little further afield, make the 3.5-mile trip to the cobbled streets of Hawkshead. Here, you can treat yourselves to some goodies from a tearoom or visit the Beatrix Potter Gallery. Continue the Beatrix Potter theme with a trip to the National Trust’s Hill Top. Just 5 miles from home, see where the author once lived.

Wind your way down the private driveway and arrive at this lovely abode which is attached to a guest house. Step inside the 19th-century, first-floor apartment and find yourselves in the lounge where you can settle down and get comfortable. Bright bursts of colour are complemented by the natural light from the French doors and the wood burner-effect electric fire warms the room. Spend time in front of the TV or pop on a DVD for a family film night. After days in the great outdoors, cook up a storm in the spacious kitchen with an electric cooker, microwave, fridge/freezer and washer/dryer, and dine together at the table. When the day is done, two tranquil bedrooms await. Perfect for families, one room has a double bed and a single, whilst the remaining room has a double bed. Completing the accommodation is a family bathroom with a shower over the bath and WC.

Sit a while on the covered veranda, a lovely spot in which to enjoy a mug of something warm. Make use of the table and chairs and dine alfresco when the weather allows or head to the lawn which an abundance of wildlife including deer, rabbits and birds, call home. There is off-road parking.

We live in Birmingham and were looking for a quiet place to relax. We had a lovely and relaxing time there. The owner of the property is a great lady, she gave us the privacy we wanted and was very supportive and polite. Great location with a beautiful view. Next to the Wray Castel and the Windermere Lake. I recommend it to others.

The cottage was perfect, everything you need and spotlessly clean. The view was something special, totally amazing. We had a lovely stay and were able to totally switch off. We will definitely be back.

We had an amazing week at Dower House Cottage. Margaret was amazing from start to finish and made us feel really welcome. The cottage was clean, well-sized and perfectly located next to Lake Windermere. The kitchen was very well equipped, and had everything we needed. We hope to return some day soon.

Dower House is amazing. It's well equipped, Margaret provided everything you could possibly need in the kitchen and the thoughtful touches of milk, cake and flowers on arrival were so welcoming. It is comfortable and cosy and the views are incredible. It's in a great location to get to most places but, a perfect place to just walk from where it is.Read more Hide

We had a wonderful time away, the views were simply stunning and the accommodation was fantastic. The facilities were very good and the owners were very welcoming and accommodating. We had an issue with the shower (our fault!) which was fixed immediately. We found plenty of things to do as a family (11, 8 & 7) and wished we had booked 2 weeks! We really enjoyed staying at the Dower House. The advance publicity does not do justice to the views which are phenomenal. The owners gave us complete privacy which we appreciated. We found it a good location from which to explore a decent cross-section of the Lakes.
