  • Exposed beams add character and charm throughout
  • Opposite the house is the classic Lake District fell walk of Striding Edge and Helvellyn
Property code: SZ181

Great for larger groups, this home has a lovely, enclosed garden for warm days and a wood burner for cosy, chilly nights.

With plenty of exciting walks straight from your door, lace up your boots and leave the car behind. There are trails leading to Helvellyn, St Sunday Crag and Fairfield, so reward your ascents with panoramic views and peak-top picnics, or head into the village of Patterdale (1.5 miles) for a bite to eat. Less than 2 miles from home, the lakeside, bustling village of Glenridding sits on the banks of Ullswater where you can enjoy a leisurely cruise with your dog on a steamer or make a splash and hire your own boat. The fabulous Aira Force waterfall is well worth a trip and is just 4.5 miles away.

Tread the gravel path from the parking area, close the gate behind you and head inside via the porch to make yourself at home. Step down a couple of steps and into the entrance hall where underfloor heating keeps your feet warm once you’ve left boots and coats on the rack or the hook. The utility room is well-equipped with a washing machine, dryer, iron, ironing board drying rack and WC. Step up through another door to the kitchen/diner where the underfloor heating continues, and the exposed beams and farmhouse charm welcome you inside. Make use of the island when preparing meals and create feasts in the Rangemaster double oven with a six-ring hob. Complete with an American-style fridge/freezer, dishwasher and all the space you need to store ingredients, you should find all you require to serve up a delicious meal. The wood burner-effect gas fire will keep you warm whilst you dine in style at the extendable dining table which seats eight. After dinner, head through to the rear of the property via a hallway with a bench and a boot rack and original door leading to the garden. Step up and into the lounge via a door and relax for a while on the comfortable sofas perfectly arranged around the wood burner which sits in the feature fireplace. Despite there being no TV reception at this bolthole, switch on the TV to watch DVDs (on the DVD HDMI player) or listen to music on the CD player whilst sitting on the window seat and taking in the views. For a moment of peace and quiet, a door leads to the snug where a pair of chairs and a selection of books and games await. When it’s time for bed, four bedrooms reside on the first floor. A door in the lounge leads to a slate spiral staircase - a beautiful original feature that must be trodden with care due to uneven, worn treads. Once at the top of the stairs, find two double bedrooms and two twins. The first double bedroom has an en-suite shower room, reached via a step up, with walk-in shower (also reached via a step up), and WC. The second double bedroom has a quirky sloping floor. Adjacent to this double bedroom, a low beam sits in an alcove that leads to the WC with a sloping ceiling. The family bathroom has a sloping ceiling too and offers you somewhere to soak in the bath or freshen up in the walk-in shower.

Boasting fantastic views, the enclosed garden is the perfect spot for a breath of fresh air and somewhere to enjoy a cup of tea. The rugged lawn is great for dogs to stretch their legs and the furniture provides you with the option to dine alfresco. Fire up the BBQ (provide your own fuel) for a sizzling sundowner feast. Take care to keep the gates closed (grazing livestock in field). There is parking in the car park, over the stream from the door.

After travelling up a long narrow fairly rough farm track into the hills came to the absolutely idyllic farmhouse under the mountain. Footpath to Helvellyn outside the door. Grisedale Beck running past the house. Warm and cosy house with log burning stove and well equipped kitchen. Wonderful holiday.

Fabulous cottage in amazing location. Very well equiped and clean with some lovely walks from door. Patterdale and Glenridding also walkable with amenities and lake steamers etc. Recommened!!! If you intend to return...keep it quiet! Only gripe..wifi could be better, only accessible in snug and lounge and a bit hit and miss. Once connected all ok. We thoroughly enjoyed our weeks stay at Elm How. The location is perfect with idyllic views, birds singing and even a visit from a red squirrel. The property has been sympathetically restored, with many of the original and traditional features youd expect in a 17th C cottage but with comfortable, cosy modern living, additions. Everything needed hadRead more been thought of. We could have stayed forever and will hopefully be back to stay again in the future. Hide

A beautiful cottage in a stunning location. The cottage was immaculate on arrival. The beds were all very comfy. The kitchen was well equipped to cater for the group of 8 of us. We had a fabulous holiday here and would highly recommend booking this cottage! We will definitely make a return visit.

Fantastic cottage. The location is superb and to top that off the cottage itself is well presented, immaculately clean, and really comfortable. Facilities were perfect. We were only 5 people but the facilities and size would easily accommodate 8. Then there's the view-wow, morning coffee in the garden can't be beaten.

Elm How is an amazing property. Very well equipped and comfortable, with bags of character. The private garden for relaxing, BBQs and the dog was just right too. Would definitely recommend, and will hopefully return at some point.

What a beautiful cottage and in the most stunning location with walks straight from the door. This is one of the best-equipped cottages we have stayed in and I felt that the price, for eight people, was fair. Also the bonus of free logs (a first in any cottage I have stayed in previously). Many thanks for a wonderful family holiday.

Elm How is located in one of the most stunning locations in the Lake District, about 10 minutes drive from Glenridding, where the road ends and the path up towards Helvellyn starts. It is comfortable and the kitchen is well equipped. We had a perfect week there.
