In the lakeside village of Watermillock, above the western shore of Ullswater, you’ll find this spacious and charming four-bedroom converted schoolhouse. This impressive 19th-century property has been transformed into a stylish and comfortable home. The open-plan living space is light and airy, providing a sociable place for guests to relax. Budding chefs will enjoy cooking up a storm on the traditional AGA in the kitchen area, while the large dining table is a focal point for meals. There’s plenty of room for everyone to find a comfy spot to sit in the lounge, where the wood burner provides some added cosiness in the evenings. For those looking for a quiet retreat, the second lounge has a sofa and recliners for putting your feet up, along with an upright piano for the musically minded. Upstairs, the four inviting bedrooms - two king-size and two twins - all have a restful ambience, while those still not ready to sleep will enjoy a game on the football table. Guests young, old, and on four legs, will love exploring the private gardens with lawns, a lily pond and woodland area.

A few hundred yards away, join the scenic Ullswater Way, a 20-mile path that circumnavigates the lake. Break up the route by hopping on the steamer that stops off at different points. For high-level walking, head to the south end of the lake 6 miles away, and the Helvellyn Range. Watermillock itself (1 mile) is great for foodies, with a number of great restaurants to choose from.

Absolutely beautiful home with top of the range furniture and every conceivable item you might need in the kitchen and elsewhere in the house. We were very pleasantly surprised. The only downside is the late check in and early check out as you basically lose a whole day.

The Lake District National Park is a superb choice for a holiday. If you love nature and the great outdoors, the Lake District is one of the UK’s most beautiful holiday destinations. Taking up the lion’s share of the north-western county of Cumbria, the region has been popular with visitors since Victorian times, and it’s the only place to find mountains in England. Peace and tranquillity characterise the wonderful Lake District, with 16 lakes, including England’s longest and deepest, there is much to see and do. Visit Coniston Water, Ullswater, Wast Water and Windermere for just a taste of what you can see in the Lake District National Park.

Small towns like Ambleside, Windermere, Hawkshead, Bowness-on-Windermere and Glenridding all make for great bases from which to relax and unwind between sojourns into the fantastic natural landscapes of the Lake District National Park. Wildlife and bird lovers can spot all kinds of lesser spotted species in situ, and walking trails reveal some of the very best vistas within English borders. To embellish the experience, you can enjoy some of the country’s cosiest pubs and restaurants, many found in picture-perfect locations.
