  • Cosy retreat for two, nestled in magnificent Matterdale
  • Close to the spectacular lake of Ullswater and Aira Force Waterfall
  • Perfect for afternoons out in the bustling, market towns of Keswick and Penrith
Property code: SZ295

A secluded, stone haven for two, set in the undulating surroundings of the north-eastern Lakes, within easy reach of Ullswater and ideal for long walks through scenic Matterdale.

Escape to this Lakeland sanctuary, where two guests and their faithful, furry friend can lose themselves in the beauty of their surroundings. Find the one-bedroom cottage, which shares a garden with its neighbour, is an idyllic base from which to go hiking and cycling. Make the 2-mile walk down to impressive Aira Force, then catch one of the famous Ullswater steamers. Disembark in Pooley Bridge for a cup of tea and slice of cake. To browse in independent shops, boutiques and market stalls, head to Keswick or Penrith, both about 11 miles away. Find cafes, restaurants and pubs in both lively hubs: hire a boat on Derwentwater from Keswick and see the castle ruins in Penrith.

Wander into this charming cottage from the back and find yourselves in the light-filled lounge/diner, with its sloping ceilings. Settle down on the comfortable seating to watch TV or perhaps a DVD, chosen from the collection here. Help yourself to a book from the shelves if you prefer. Head through into the kitchen to prepare dinner with the fresh, local produce you have found on your trips out. The kitchen has an electric oven and halogen hobs, microwave and fridge. Carry dinner through to eat together at the table. As night falls, make your way through to the bright bedroom, with its king-size, four-poster bed and en-suite bathroom, which comes with a bath, with handheld shower, WC and handbasin.

Bask out in the sunshine on spring and summer days in the garden, which has a summer house and is shared with another cottage. Look out for wildlife and take in the views. There is parking at the cottage.

This cottage is cosy but needs a thorough clean and carpets replaced for laminate and new rugs.

Lovely little house, consider building a small porch for wet coasts and muddy boots.

Exactly what we needed for a 3 night stay with a Labrador. Perfect remote location with quiet footpaths from the door. Lovely large outside space with plenty seating options. Had everything we needed plus some old DVDs which really added to the weekend escape from busy life.

Lovely quiet location with superb walks locally. For the Lakes this cottage is cheap. The small lounge is comfortable and the bedroom is fine. For a short stay the kitchen is adequate (no dishwasher) although we only had one simple meal there. The bathroom really lets the place down with the lino coming up around the edges and only a hand held showRead moreer in the bath. Heating comes on at 6.30pm so in October, we needed to use the plug-in electric heaters until then. After that the place is cosy. Hide

Avoid staying at this property if you want Wi-Fi that works, you dont want to awkwardly squat in a bath to have a shower, & you dont want to sleep on a soft mattress that gives you back ache. As with all the places Ive stayed with Sallys cottages/Holiday Cottages they totally scrimp on their properties, doing the bare minimum on the interior/cleaniRead moreng. They totally rely on the fantastic location compensating their penny pinching neglect of the properties. Theyre overpriced. Hide

Kirksty Brow is a great place to stay. Easy to get to other areas of the lakes and local walks are great - beautiful views of Ullswater and surrounding areas.

Beautiful scenic location; quiet, with plenty of lovely walks on the doorstep. The nearest pub/restaurant is a good 45 minute walk along a busy road can be scary on foot. Plenty of wildlife to see just outside the cottage; a cuckoo in the distance, woodpecks, and bats at dusk. The cottage can be very warm in the summer due to Velux windows in the 3Read more rooms, sadly with no blinds, but it's otherwise comfortable, with everything you need if self catering. Hide

Small space in kitchen, good space on bedroom. Can be difficult for tall people as bed is not short. Location very good, amazing forest very close to this property. Kitchen have all what you need for few days of stay also very very warm inside ( which was ok).

As a lot of other holiday makers have said the cottage desperately needs a make over. It's all right claiming it's quirky and quaint but that doesn't mean it should be shabby, which it looks. Extractor fans in kitchen and bathroom aren't working, the fridge hadn't been defrosted in a long while. Lino in the bathroom needs replacing. The really redeRead moreeming feature is the location and it's relatively cheap. Hide

We had a wonderful stay at Kirksty Brow. It is very hidden away at the top of a hill with superb views and great walks. I took a lot of extra utensils and towels, but didn't them as the cottage was more than adequately supplied with them. Lovely to see a 3 star accommodation with items such as iron/board, vacuum cleaner, hairdrier and slow cooker! Read moreThe only negative is the very steep ascent and bends up to the property. Apart from this, a wonderful little hideway perfect for a couple and dog. Hide
