Overflowing with tradition and charm, this beautiful stone house in a quaint complex of properties in Rosthwaite originally served as the village’s Post Office. Today the building’s ground-floor apartment sleeps four people over two bedrooms and welcomes two canine companions – making it the ideal accommodation option for small families or groups of friends in search of a characterful cottage in a beautiful village location. Spend your days hiking the Coast to Coast and Cumbria Way (both routes pass through the village), and your evenings warming your toes by the apartment’s flickering wood burner.

Step inside and you’ll find yourself in the cosy lounge. Make yourself at home and then head through to the light and bright kitchen/diner to rustle up some dinner for your group. Get everyone together to dine around the table, before heading out to the shared courtyard to enjoy a glass of wine as you watch the stars come out. Alternatively, retreat to the lounge to lose yourself in a good book on the window seat or warm your toes by the wood burner. When the day is done, you’ll find two lovely bedrooms to choose from.

Take a stroll to Millican's Dalton's Caves (1 mile), where the self-styled ‘Professor of Adventure’ lived each summer for nearly 50 years. Alternatively, go rock climbing at Little Chamonix (6 miles), one of the UK's most popular multi-pitch climbs. Or make your way into Keswick and check out the artisan spirits and liqueurs on offer at the Spirit of Keswick Distillery (6.5 miles).

  • 2 bedrooms – 1 super-king-size zip-and-link (which can be made into a twin on request) and 1 double
  • 2 en-suite shower rooms with shower and WC
  • Electric oven and hob, microwave and fridge/freezer
  • Heated electric clothes dryer
  • Wood burner in the lounge
  • Smart TV in the lounge

  • Allocated parking for 1 car only in the shared car park
  • Farm café/shop (seasonal opening) are within walking distance.
  • 3 country pubs within 1 mile of the property
  • There are alternative routes to Rosthwaite available from Braithwaite or from Grange. From these two start points, route to Buttermere via the Newlands pass. Once in Buttermere, take the B5289 to Rosthwaite via the Honister pass.
  • This property will be decorated for Christmas
  • Arrival: 16:00 onwards
  • Departure: before 10:00, unless otherwise stated in your arrival details

We found it a bit soulless and corporate - pricey for a place that's not particularly special.

Fabulous holiday. Lovely cottage. Comfortable. Layout excellent. Wi-Fi very reliable. Great location. Good info in visitor book. Hopefully this will be sorted from now on but there was dog hair on floor throughout. Also on bedclothes and chair in back bedroom and in shower there. Lovely cottage - well presented, clean and comfortable with a nice welcome box. Very surprising not to have a washing machine given the 4 star rating. The shared courtyard is more of an alley to the parking area - it cant be used to sit out or dry clothes. Road outside is surprisingly busy.

Very clean and well equipped cottage with comfortable beds in ideal area for walking straight from the property. Parking can be an issue especially if you or guests in other properties have large vehicles. The cottage opens straight onto the road which can be busy at times. Overall we enjoyed our stay.

We had a really lovely time in the Old Posthouse. It is in a beautiful setting in Borrowdale with a multitude of walks from the doorstep. The cottage is nicely appointed and very clean. It is right on the road, and the farm traffic does start early but a few good walks should have you sleeping through this! A lovely welcome pack awaited us which waRead mores a nice touch. The cafe in the village is well worth a visit, and there is also a lovely cafe in Grange. We would definitely visit again, thank you. Hide
