Property code: SZ514

Located in the only coastal village in the Lake District National Park, this haven for four is ideally placed for exploring Ravenglass, the coastline and Lakeland countryside.

Set out on foot from the property to enjoy a leisurely stroll through the village of Ravenglass, stopping to admire the views of Muncaster Fell along the way. With its old-fashioned feel, Ravenglass was once an important Roman port and military fort but is now best known as the starting point for the Ravenglass and Eskdale steam railway. It is also home to two pubs, a cafe, a children’s park, a post office and the meeting place of three rivers. For history, visit Muncaster Castle, 1.5 miles away, or for cycling, choose between the steep roads of the Eskdale Valley and the low-level forest tracks of the Eskdale Trail. Meanwhile, wonderful walks and breathtaking views can be discovered in Wasdale, 10 miles away, boasting England’s highest mountain, deepest lake, smallest church and arguably Britain’s favourite view.

This spacious property offers a delightful blend of old and new, boasting original stained-glass windows, feature fireplaces, a cosy wood burner and fresh modern decor. The property opens into a generous and sociable kitchen, equipped with a range oven, gas hobs, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, microwave and small breakfast table. Find all the equipment you need to prepare tasty and lavish dishes for all the family to enjoy in the separate dining room, with its feature fireplace and helpful map of the area for planning the following day’s adventures. An elegant lounge with a warming wood burner is furnished with inviting sofas and fitted with a Smart TV and CD player. Upstairs are two light and airy bedrooms: one elegant king-size with a wrought-iron bed, feature fireplace and antique furniture, and one twin which can be made up as a supper king on request, also with a feature fireplace. The bedrooms share a nautically themed bathroom with a beautiful Victorian free-standing bath and spacious separate shower.

Outside, a delightful front garden is a peaceful spot for al fresco dining with a view of the estuary. To the rear, renovated outbuildings house the washing machine, tumble dryer and WC and provide lockable storage space for bikes or kayaks. There is parking on a small layby on the road to the rear of the property, with additional parking available in the village.

Enjoyed our stay in this lovely property. Loved watching the birds, tides and sunset on the estuary. Excellent location for steam railway and coast train. Walked the coast path to Seascale and got the train back one day. Great holiday - would recommend

For a winter escape The Retreat was a real gem of a find, cosy, very comfortable and in an ideal location. It really felt like a home from home, we wanted for nothing. We walked from thRead moree door for most of the week but a short drive took us into the heart of the fells & a hop on the train to explore further the coastal path. Hide

The Retreat is a comfortable home-from-home property. Everything has been thought of and we wanted for nothing. It's position in Ravenglass meant that we didn't use the car all week - instead doing a different daily walk from the front door each day.

Lovely cottage in a great - but quiet - corner of the Lakes. Three good pubs on the doorstep, and very handy for both the R&ER railway and network rail station. Great to be able to sit in the window seat and watch the tide coming in!

Good location central in village. House is well equipped for self catering though I would bring some oven gloves, and also a torch if walking into the village in the evening. We would certainly look to staying here again in the future.

Great House. Great Location. Great holiday with many different landscapes. A comfortable, well equipped, recently refurbished cottage. We have been visiting the Lake District for years but had never been to the coast here, which was a revelation. Plus good access to the quieter west side of the mountains.
