The town itself has plenty to offer visitors, with its unique blend of shopping, history and culture. Between the 14th and 19th centuries, Kendal was a prominent location for industry, with mills lining the banks of the River Kent. However, within the town’s boundaries you can find buildings which date back even further than this. Step out of your cottage and be greeted with the 12th century Kendal Castle, or book an apartment with a great view of the 13th century Holy Trinity Church - the largest in Cumbria.

Come and explore Kendal in the Lake District

Kendal is well-known for its links to Alfred Wainwright, who lived in the town for 50 years and is the leading authority on walks in the Lake District, having compiled the seven-volume Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells as well as a guide to the Coast to Coast walk. Some of these fells are within easy reach of Kendal, including Kendal Fell, where you can also enjoy a leisurely stroll through the ancient Serpentine Woods. Walks up the nearby Cunswick and Scout Scars are also highly enjoyable. Lake Windermere is the closest lake, and, being the longest, offers several fantastic walks with spectacular views over the water. Among the closest waterside resorts you can pay a visit to are Bowness-on-Windermere and Windermere.

If you’re curious to find out more about the history of the local area, there are plenty of interesting museums to check out. The Kendal Museum gives a good all-round history of the town, and also displays a model of how the castle would have looked during its heyday. Meanwhile, the Museum of Lakeland Life gives insights into how people across Cumbria and the Lake District lived and worked throughout the last 300 years. Finally, you can also check out the Museum of Natural History here, which is one of the oldest and longest-running in the UK.

Plenty of fun-filled days out for all the family can also be found in and around Kendal. Meet some friendly farm animals, enjoy a tractor ride and take on the maize maze at the Lakeland Maze Farm Park, or enjoy some adrenaline-fuelled climbing in all weathers at the Lakeland Climbing Centre.

For some evening entertainment, check out the Brewery Arts Centre, while there is also an excellent choice of pubs and restaurants to relax and enjoy your nights in, should you not fancy cooking at your Kendal holiday cottage. Enjoy stunning views while you dine at the Riverview Restaurant at the Riverside Hotel, where there is an a la carte menu - bar food can also be enjoyed at the hotel's Tannery Bar & Bistro.
