Explore the town of Keswick in the Lake District

Keswick is an idyllic and memorable town settled, nestled in the shadow of the mountains on the shores of Lake Derwentwater. Now a major centre for tourism in the Lakes, Keswick offers a wide range of attractions from shops, restaurants and museums to boating trips on the lake. Outdoor activities such as walking, climbing and biking are amongst the many sports undertaken in this beautiful area.

Surrounded by fells, Keswick is a haven for those seeking a walking holiday, and it is the perfect place to explore the northern lakes from. Suitable to suit anybody is the walk up Latrigg, with an easy access path and a short length of around 1.5 miles. Those seeking more of a challenge can take on the Wainwrights, a series of fells in the area that feature in Alfred Wainwright’s Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells. For some level but equally scenic walks, why not try the Keswick to Threlkeld railway path as well as the Derwentwater Walk, a 10-mile waymarked walk taking you around the entire circumference of Derwentwater? All promise spectacular views and the chance to get out and about in beautiful surroundings. Check out our guide on mountains to climb in the Lake District.

Besides its natural beauty, Keswick isn’t short of attractions, with one of them being the Lake District Wildlife Park, offering a fun day out for all the family. There is plenty to keep everyone entertained, whether you’re visiting for a short break or a longer holiday. Perhaps its most unique visitor attraction is the Pencil Museum. A visit here is more interesting than you might think, and on display you will find the first ever pencil as well as the world’s longest colouring pencil. For something a little more adrenaline-fuelled, head to the Keswick Climbing Wall and Outdoor Adventure Centre, which offers activities for both beginners and the more advanced, or the Newlands Adventure Centre, where you can try canoeing, kayaking and high ropes courses.

In the evenings, there are plenty of good places to eat or buy local food in the town, making Keswick excellent for both self-catering holidays, and for a special night out, try the Theatre by the Lake. Catch a performance of a classic play here while also enjoying the amazing scenic backdrop of Derwentwater. Keswick also holds an annual Mountain Festival, with a broad line-up that spans sporting events, live music and world-class speakers.

A holiday here is a holiday to remember.
