A paradise for fell walkers and cyclists alike, the Ullswater Valley is virtually on the doorstep and offers a wealth of charming lowland rambles and more challenging hikes.

Within 7 miles of the peaceful Ullswater, Troutbeck is a paradise for fell walkers and cyclists alike. Spend a day on the water by hiring a kayak or, for a more leisurely pace, hop aboard one of the Ullswater steamers for a gentle cruise. Historians will love exploring the rooms at Dalemain, an impressive stately home 8.5 miles away, whilst the gothic ruins of Lowther Castle, 12 miles away, are well worth a visit. For keen hikers and hillwalkers, tackling Helvellyn, one of the highest mountains in the Lake District, is a must, and the tumbling waterfalls at Aira Force (4.5 miles) are just beautiful. For some retail therapy, head to either Penrith or Keswick, both within 10 miles and both offering independent retailers, pubs, cafes and restaurants.

Enter this delightful home from home into the attractive dining room, perfect for gathering everyone for a hearty breakfast or a delicious dinner. In the summertime, the double front doors can be thrown open to create a light and airy dining area, while in winter a wood burner offers a cosy feel, perfect for a festive gathering. The open-plan living space comprises the kitchen and the sunroom creating a social hub in the heart of the house. The kitchen contains a split-level electric oven and hob, a tall fridge/freezer and plenty of clever storage. The adjoining utility room houses a microwave, dishwasher, washing machine and serves as a boot and drying room and can be accessed directly from the outside where the wood store and outdoor WC are located. The sunroom has large gable windows that overlook the lawned garden towards the Blencathra mountain range. On chilly evenings, settle on the sofa with a DVD in front of the wood burner. There is a double bedroom, with a small TV, and a twin bedroom on the ground floor, each with a double wardrobe. A shower room with WC can also be found on this floor. Upstairs, the spacious and light living room makes the most of the views thanks to the two gable windows. Another lovely spot to relax, there is one three-seater sofa, one two-seater and a comfortable armchair, perfect for settling down with a good book or DVD. Two double bedrooms, each with built-in wardrobes, dressers and a small TV, have en-suite bathrooms, one with a shower over the bath.

Outside is a pleasant, lawned garden with ample rattan furniture, ideal for al fresco dining morning, noon and night. A lockable garage may be used by guests to store plenty of bikes, canoes, kayaks and any other outdoor equipment.

The house is in a great location for the north of the Lakes. Great views of Blencathra from one of the upstairs bedrooms. The house is just off the A66, which is a very busy road (road noise) however we knew this before booking so didnt bother us particularly. We relied on the two wood burning stoves downstairs for heating, which was cozy. The bathRead morerooms are adequate. It was good to have two en-suite bathrooms upstairs. Hide

We thoroughly enjoyed our week here, best thing was walking into a lovely warm house the first night. The owner was very helpful when we had a problem with the log burner., and paid us a visit later in the week to check we were ok.

A lovely house and lovely host. Very well equipped kitchen, toys and books for the children and the beds were super comfortable. No tumble dryer, which as a family of six with four small children, made laundry hard work. My only real issue was the A66. It was noisy all day and night, and there was no decent gate on the property to shut to allow chiRead moreldren to play safely in the garden. The house though was beautiful and comfortable! Hide

Beautiful house with an equally beautiful garden! Everything was so well thought out and fully equipped with everything you need. Our little one loved the box of toys and we loved the garden furniture to relax and chat on. You can hear the road, but you soon get used to that, and at night time there is very little traffic anyway, so wasnt an issue.Read more Cant wait to come back - maybe in winter next time to make use of the enticing fireplace! The cottage was clean, spacious, big and had mostly everything you need. We loved seeing the sheep so close to the window and garden, we would highly recommend.

I had very mixed feelings about this property. It has lots of space for families. It has an adjoining property.. The photographs make, mainly lounge look bright but is actually quite dark. You are very close to A66 but with windows closed noise is not intrusive and it's handy for access. Some rooms look a bit tired and in need of renovation (can't Read moreremember when I last saw pink and green bathrooms). I think the big question is would I return or recommend to a friend and I'd have to say no. Hide

The house contains everything you need. The traffic from the A66 did not concern us as it wasn't constant like a motorway. Having an upstairs lounge area means there is plenty of space for families.
