The cottage enjoys a scenic spot in the Buttermere Valley between the peak of Grasmoor and the northern tip of Crummock Water. A haven for walkers, the area is known for its high fells and woodland rambles, with popular walks including the ridge walk from Buttermere to Rannerdale, the Corpse Road and tumuli walk, and the trail from Lanthwaite Wood to Crummock Water. The peaceful hamlet of Loweswater (1.5 miles) has a welcoming inn and is just a mile from the beautiful lake of Loweswater itself. Heading west, you can visit the historic town of Cockermouth (7.5 miles), or travelling east, the bustling town of Keswick (12 miles) has numerous attractions including Derwent Pencil Museum and Puzzling Place.

Entering this imaginatively updated barn conversion, the ground floor is occupied by a cosy, welcoming and spacious open-plan lounge/kitchen/diner. Full of character, this charming space retains original features including exposed wooden beams and makes a wonderfully relaxing living space. The lounge area has plenty of seating, a TV and a warming wood burner, providing the ideal spot to unwind in the evening. Everyone can gather around the snug dining table to enjoy a meal which you can prepare in the stylish kitchen, which is equipped with an electric oven, separate hob, microwave and fridge/freezer. Upstairs, there are two fresh and bright bedrooms to choose from. Set on the half-landing, the delightful double bedroom has a vaulted ceiling, a skylight and a feature low window which once served as the barn doors. At the end of the landing is a second bedroom with a king-size bed, original beams and quirky cottage-style windows. The property also has a family bathroom complete with a shower over the bath and a WC.

Outside, a path weaves its way through the pretty garden, past the lawn and flower beds to a picnic table which makes a great spot for sitting back and taking in the stunning views of the surrounding fells. Off-road parking is available for two cars in the courtyard at the front of the cottage.

This was our third visit to the cottage as we find it perfect as a base in one of our favourite locations. The owners of the cottage provide everything you could possibly need and go above and beyond in making you comfortable and well provided for. The cottage is warm and cosy, has everything you need for day to day activities and is in a superb lRead moreocation with a lovely well tended garden to admire the views . We would highly recommend this to anyone wishing to enjoy the peace and tranquility of the area and have easy access to fell walking from the door. If like us you prefer not to use the car there is a bus which stops right outside the cottage. Hide

If you are out most days as we were Wainwright bagging, then the cottage was OK, it served its purpose. It would be a bit cramped if there were two couples and not a particularly ideal environment if you spend most time indoors as there are no views. However, it was clean and tidy, instant warmth from the heating, so it suited our needs admirably. Read moreThank you! Hide

The location is 7 stars out of 5. Wow. If I was a little bit smaller, I would definitely come back. Me and my son are almost 2 meters tall. We walked around the house like Smagol. That fits the surroundings, but ... Anyone taller than 1.85 m should be aware of ceiling-beams. The cottage is in a stunning spot with walks from the door and lake access nearby. Beds and sofas are very comfortable. Dining chairs are not at all comfortable. The cottage is compact so the kitchen is cramped for worktop, especially as there is no dishwasher, but the location makes up for these shortcomings. There is outside seating and easy parkRead moreing. Id say road access from the north is better than the beautiful but hair-raising Newlands valley approach. Hide

This cottage is in a spectacular setting with walks from the door. The kitchen area is a bit cramped, but well equipped. The dining chairs are not at all comfortable but there are some comfy sofas. The bedrooms are large and the beds are comfortable.

Lovely cottage in a perfect location for the fells, the lakes & tourist attractions. Plenty of walks to suit all abilities right from the cottage door. Two good pubs in Buttermere & Loweswater for food. The cottage was comfortable & cosy & very well equipped. The welcome pack was a lovely touch too. Would definitely recommend

Loved staying here, cottage was comfy and well equipped. There is so much to do. Bus stops nearby too if you want to leave the car behind or get the bus out and walk back etc. Will be back for more walking, bird watching and canoeing plus lots more to see in Cockermouth, Keswick and the Honister slate mine which we didn't have time to do.

Four of us really enjoyed this cottage. It's comfortable, well equipped and very cosy and warm, set in a beautiful unspoiled part of the Lakes. It's peacful & quiet & very near Crummockwater. There are several delightful walks from the doorstep and fells to climb. (Can recommend Whiteside). The excellent Kirlstile Inn is 3m through the woods and thRead moree lake shore. Great spot to eat; booking needed. Only things we missed were a place to leave muddy boots etc & a dishwasher. Otherwise perfect. Hide

Lovely cottage in a peaceful location, great to get away from it all. Very low doorway and beams, so tall people have to watch out (the beam above the shower got us a few times!) Overall, a great place for a short break with lots of walks from the doorstep (the circuit of Crummock Water via Rannerdale Knotts was a particular highlight)
