It’s thought that the name Buttermere comes from the Old English ‘butere mere’ meaning ‘the lake by the dairy pastures’. For those who love to explore beyond their holiday cottages, you’ll be pleased to find an abundance of walks taking you through Buttermere Valley’s farms and woodlands. A walk around Buttermere Lake is relatively easy but offers one of the most scenic walks in the whole of the Lake District. The most popular view here looks down on the lake towards Fleetwith Pike, a nearly vertical cliff. If you want to do something a little bit different, head to Go Ape, a high ropes facility situated 11 miles from Buttermere Lake. There’s also an alpaca walking experience, 7 miles away, for a unique and memorable activity.
