Christmas in the Lake District

Christmas in the Lakes is a magical time of year and our villages start getting ready in November with some wonderful festive celebrations. This is a lovely way to get into the festive spirit, find some unique gifts, taste some delicious food and enjoy a Lake District Christmas break.

Ambleside Christmas lights and lantern procession

Every year on the second or third Saturday in November, the people of Ambleside parade through the town at dusk, carrying hundreds of paper lanterns. Young and old turn out to witness this spectacular procession, as traffic is halted and Christmas street lights throughout the town centre are switched on, as if by magic, by Santa Claus... This is followed by a fantastic firework display in the park.

When: November 17th 2018

Ulverston Dickensian Festival

Attracting thousands of people every year to enjoy the wonderful atmosphere of a traditional market town in the Dickensian era, Ulverston puts on a tremendous show every year marking the start of the Christmas season, and bringing a little Christmas magic to both young and old. The historic market town is full of fantastic shops, great pubs and cafes, cobbled streets and the Dickensian Festival boasts a huge variety of free entertainment, free events for children, and fabulous Christmas market stalls with lots of unique gifts and festive food.

Christmas in Penrith

Penrith becomes a magical winter wonderland during Christmas in Penrith, celebrating the festive season for a month before the big day. Look out for mischievous elves, Santa’s post boxes and beautifully dressed shop windows around the town. From November 24th-26th and December 1st-3rd, the Christmas Bazaar, with its traditional wooden chalets, will also come to Penrith.

Hawkshead Christmas Fair

This is a wonderful weekend with over 50 indoor and outdoor seasonal craft and gift stalls, street entertainers – jugglers, stilt walkers, magicians, street theatre and of course Father Christmas. There is a lantern procession and carols in the square on the Saturday which really captures the magic of Christmas. Across the weekend the village centre also holds a beer festival, perfect for finding your new favourite drink.

Windermere Christmas Celebration

Held on the streets of Windermere, close to the shores of the enormous lake, this Christmas market celebrates all things local with a truly feel-good event. Father Christmas Tea Party

This year the World of Beatrix Potter in Bowness-on-Windermere is hosting a very special event: a series of tea parties with Father Christmas.
